Lugo Elementary School fifth- and sixth-graders recently traveled back in time, exploring art history from ancient civilizations and even creating works of their own during a special two-day visit from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in February.
As part of LACMA’s Ancient Worlds Mobile Museum program, students from both grade levels had the opportunity to examine ancient artworks featuring mythological beings from Egypt, Southeast Asia and Rome. These composite creatures, such as centaurs and griffins, were powerful figures formed by combining characteristics of different animals.
Inside the traveling studio and classroom, students created their own composite creatures out of clay, selecting features from numerous stenciled animals such as a cat, lion and penguin. Meanwhile, the other half of each class had the unique experience of handling real artifacts for themselves, bringing history to life through hands-on exploration.
The Mobile Museum is designed to travel to public schools and give students the opportunity to connect with art in a fun, educational way they might not have been able to otherwise. Bringing this hands-on and engaging opportunity to Lugo is a testament to Lynwood Unified’s dedication to equity and access, ensuring all students have meaningful learning experiences year-round.
