Strengthening Community Through Culture and Wellness at Lugo Elementary

The Lynwood community came together on January 25 for a day of connection, growth and heritage at Lugo Elementary’s La Cultura Cura Festival, where families and community members participated in various bilingual workshops highlighting the importance of cultural traditions and wellness of the body, mind and spirit.

After kicking off the festival with a community circle led by elder Guillermo Hernandez, "Tata G," families explored the deep connection between cultural heritage and mental and physical wellness. The festival offered activities and resources, including sensory experiences for families, free haircuts, information on local food banks and workshops centered on family wellness.

Topics included advocacy in special education for parents, the healing power of traditional foods, children's yoga, stress management techniques and more. Live music created an uplifting atmosphere, while attendees enjoyed nutritious cultural meals, fostering a vibrant and enriching setting for everyone.

“Given our current climate and the stressors we have in our lives, we wanted to support families by offering tools and practices they can use at home,” Principal Paul Ceron, Ed.D., said. “A healthy community benefits everyone, especially our children and students. When we take care of our own well-being, we are better able to support our children.”

Lynwood Unified is dedicated to empowering and uplifting the community by offering more than just education. Recognizing that the well-being of the entire community plays a vital role in the success of all students, the District prioritizes opportunities that foster a culture of growth, unity and resilience.
